Appendicitis

Appendicitis – Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Appendicitis is a medical condition where the appendix, a small tubular organ attached to the large intestine, becomes inflamed and filled with pus. This inflammation typically results from infection or obstruction and can quickly turn serious if not addressed promptly.

Causes of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is usually triggered by a blockage in the appendix, often from hardened stool, foreign objects, or infections. The obstruction leads to bacterial growth, causing the appendix to swell and potentially rupture.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp pain starting near the navel, shifting to the lower right abdomen

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Fever and chills

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Abdominal swelling

  • Pain that worsens with movement or coughing

Complications If Untreated

  • Peritonitis – Infection spreading to the abdominal lining

  • Appendicular abscess – Pus accumulation around the appendix

  • Appendicular mass – Formation of inflamed tissue around the appendix

  • Rupture – Can lead to life-threatening conditions

Diagnostic Procedures

Diagnosis is made through a combination of physical examination, abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, and blood tests. Imaging helps identify appendiceal inflammation and rule out other conditions.

Treatment Options

Laparoscopic Appendectomy

The preferred method for appendicitis treatment. It involves minimal incisions, quicker recovery, and lower risk of complications.

Open Surgery

Reserved for complex cases like ruptured or gangrenous appendix. It may be necessary when extensive infection is involved.

Types of Appendicitis

  • Acute Appendicitis – Sudden and severe inflammation

  • Subacute & Recurrent Appendicitis – Milder symptoms that return

  • Perforated & Gangrenous Appendicitis – Advanced stages with tissue death

  • Appendicular Abscess & Mass – Infection leading to pus formation or mass

  • Appendicolith & Mucocele – Calcified deposits or mucus-filled swellings

  • Stump Appendicitis – Inflammation after prior appendectomy

  • Appendiceal Cancer – Rare malignancy involving neuroendocrine or epithelial tumors
