Colon Cancer Treatment | CM Best Gastro Care and Eye Care
Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, begins in the large intestine—the colon—which plays a vital role in processing waste before it exits the body. The disease often develops from small polyps that gradually become cancerous over time. Regular screening and early intervention can prevent progression and improve outcomes significantly.
Symptoms of Colon Cancer
Colon cancer often presents with:
A persistent change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)
Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
Ongoing abdominal discomfort or cramps
Unexplained weight loss
A feeling that the bowel doesn’t empty completely
Fatigue or weakness
Early stages may not produce obvious symptoms, making screening critical.
Surgical Treatment for Colon Cancer
Colectomy (Colon Resection Surgery)
A colectomy involves removing part or all of the colon to eliminate cancerous growths or large polyps.
Types of Colectomy:
Total Colectomy: Entire colon is removed.
Partial/Subtotal Colectomy: Affected portion of the colon is removed.
Hemicolectomy: Either the right or left side of the colon is removed.
Proctocolectomy: Both the colon and rectum are removed.
The remaining sections are either reconnected or diverted based on disease severity.
Colostomy
When reconnection isn’t possible immediately, a colostomy is performed. In this, the colon is brought through the abdominal wall to divert stool into a special bag (colostomy pouch). This may be temporary or permanent based on the case.
